Subaru and Saab Recall Vehicles for Airbag Inflator Rupture Risk
Subaru and Saab are recalling specific 2003-2008 models because moisture can cause the passenger airbag inflator to rupture, potentially sending metal fragments into the cabin.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect could result in 'serious injury or death' due to metal fragments striking occupants, which aligns with the rubric criteria for Severe (score 4) involving significant injury reports or potential for serious harm.
Plain-English summary
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2004-2005 Impreza, 2003-2008 Legacy, and 2003-2008 Outback vehicles, as well as 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles. These vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion. Over time, this moisture could cause the inflator to rupture upon deployment.
In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants, potentially resulting in serious injury or death. The recall affects approximately 432,016 vehicles.
Subaru will notify their owners, and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015, and the Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783 or Saab at 1-800-955-9007. This recall supersedes previous campaigns 14V-399 and partially supersedes 14V-763.
