Ford Recalls Fiesta, Fusion, and MKZ Vehicles for Door Latch Defect
Ford is recalling specific 2011-2014 Fiesta, Fusion, and MKZ vehicles because a door latch component may break, potentially allowing doors to open while driving.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (door latches) that could lead to doors opening while in motion, posing a significant injury risk to occupants.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2011-2014 Ford Fiesta, 2013-2014 Ford Fusion, and 2013-2014 Lincoln MKZ vehicles. The recall was initially notified to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on April 23, 2015, and expanded on April 30, 2015, to cover an additional 119,567 vehicles. The total number of affected vehicles is 456,440.
The defect involves a component within the door latches that may break. This failure can make the doors difficult to latch or lead the driver or passengers to believe a door is securely closed when it is not. A door that is not securely latched could open while the vehicle is in motion, increasing the risk of injury to a vehicle occupant.
Ford will notify owners, and dealers will replace all four door latches with an improved part free of charge. Interim notifications were mailed to owners on June 5, 2015, and the recall began on December 18, 2015. Owners may contact Ford customer service at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
