What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (motorcycle) where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for potential crash risk without confirmed fatalities or injuries.
Plain-English summary
Harley-Davidson Motor Company is recalling certain model year 2014-2015 motorcycles, including the Electra Glide Ultra Classic, Street Glide, Road Glide, and Ultra Limited models. The recall was initially notified to the agency on April 9, 2015, and expanded on July 31, 2015, to cover an additional 61,065 motorcycles. The total number of affected vehicles is 106,966.
The defect involves the clutch master cylinder, which may lose the ability to generate enough lift to disengage the clutch, particularly if the motorcycle has been parked for an extended period. When the engine is running and the motorcycle is in gear, if the clutch cannot be fully disengaged, the motorcycle may move unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
Harley-Davidson will notify owners, and dealers will flush the clutch system and rebuild the clutch master cylinder free of charge. The recall began on April 23, 2015. Owners may contact Harley-Davidson customer service at 1-800-258-2464 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
