Toyota Recalls 2014-2015 Camry, Highlander, and RAV4 for Steering Defect

Toyota is recalling specific 2014-2015 Camry, Highlander, and RAV4 vehicles because a manufacturing defect in the electric power steering system may cause it to fail, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (steering system failure) that increases the risk of a crash, which aligns with the rubric criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2015 Camry, Camry Hybrid, Highlander, and Highlander Hybrid, and 2014-2015 RAV4 vehicles. The recall involves approximately 110,085 vehicles.

A component of the electric power steering (EPS) electronic control unit (ECU) may have been damaged during the manufacturing process. Over time, this damage may result in failure of the electric power steering system, which increases the risk of a crash due to an unexpected loss of power steering.

Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the serial number of the EPS ECU or steering column assembly. If the number is within the affected range, the EPS ECU will be replaced free of charge. The recall began on May 7, 2015. Owners may contact Toyota customer service at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
