Volvo Recalls 2015-2016 VNX and VNL Trucks for Brake Fire Risk

Volvo is recalling 2015-2016 VNX and VNL trucks because a parking brake defect may cause overheating and fire. Owners should contact dealers for inspection.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake system) that explicitly increases the risk of fire, meeting the criteria for a Severe (4) rating.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2015 and 2016 VNX and VNL trucks manufactured between May 20, 2014, and March 6, 2015. These vehicles are equipped with specific Haldex Life Seal Type 30/30 Long Stroke Air Brake Actuators manufactured between January 9, 2014, and October 28, 2014.

The recall addresses a defect where the internal rubber diaphragm in the parking brake section of the actuator may not be completely attached to the actuation mechanism. If this occurs, internal leakage may trap air pressure in the parking brake section, preventing the actuator from fully releasing. This can induce brake drag, leading to overheated wheelend service brakes and an increased risk of fire.

Volvo will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the brake actuator and replace it if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on March 20, 2015. Owners can contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
