Idle Free Systems is recalling Electric Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) because mounting points may crack or bolts may fail, causing the unit to detach from the truck.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a component may detach from the truck, creating a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Idle Free Systems, Inc. (IFS) is recalling certain Electric Auxiliary Power Units (APUs), part number BA600, manufactured between October 1, 2009, and April 30, 2015. The affected units have metal housings where the mounting points may crack and tear. Additionally, the mounting bolts on these power units may loosen or possibly fail.
If the mounting points crack or the attaching bolts fail, the power unit may detach from the truck. This detachment creates a road hazard and increases the risk of a crash.
IFS will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the APU for damage. Where needed, dealers will install a welded gusset upgrade kit to strengthen the APU C-channels. All units will also receive stronger clamping brackets. All repairs will be performed free of charge. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
