Volvo Recalls VNL Trucks Due to APU Mounting Defect

Volvo is recalling 2012-2014 VNL trucks because Electric Auxiliary Power Units may detach, creating a road hazard and increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where a component may detach, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

Volvo Trucks North America is recalling certain model year 2012-2014 Volvo VNL trucks manufactured between December 1, 2011, and September 1, 2013. These vehicles are equipped with specific Electric Auxiliary Power Units (APUs) manufactured by Idle Free Systems (IFS), part number BA600.

The recall addresses a defect where the metal housings of the affected APUs may have mounting points that crack and tear. Additionally, the mounting bolts for these power units may loosen or fail. If this occurs, the power unit may detach from the truck, becoming a road hazard and increasing the risk of a crash.

Volvo will notify owners, and IFS dealers will inspect the APU for damage. Where needed, dealers will install a welded gusset upgrade kit to strengthen the APU C-channels, and all units will receive stronger clamping brackets. The recall began on December 10, 2015. Owners may contact Volvo customer service at 1-800-528-6586 or IFS customer service at 1-920-206-9333.
