Honda Recalls Acura ILX Vehicles for Headlight Fire Risk

Honda is recalling certain 2013-2014 Acura ILX vehicles because excessive heat around the headlight bulb may cause smoke, melting, or fire, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk of fire and reduced visibility leading to crashes, which aligns with the rubric criterion for 'significant injury/property-damage reports' or structural vehicle defects involving fire hazards.

Plain-English summary

American Honda Motor Co., Inc. is recalling certain model year 2013 Acura ILX vehicles manufactured between January 16, 2012, and March 1, 2013, and ILX Hybrid vehicles manufactured between January 12, 2012, and February 7, 2013. The recall also covers certain model year 2014 ILX vehicles manufactured between May 2, 2013, and May 31, 2014, and ILX Hybrid vehicles manufactured between October 18, 2013, and February 19, 2014. A total of 14,078 vehicles are affected.

The defect involves excessive heat temperatures around the headlight bulb and reflector unit. This heat may diminish the headlight output, causing smoke, melting, and potential fire. The diminished light output may decrease driver visibility, increasing the risk of a crash, while the overheating components increase the risk of a vehicle fire. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 108.

Honda will notify owners, and dealers will replace the headlights free of charge. The recall began in July 2014. Owners may contact Acura customer service at 1-800-862-2872 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
