Trimas is recalling specific Highland and Reese roof rack carriers because they may lack warning labels against using them with cargo bags or boxes.

What this means for you

Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 3/5 (High).

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the missing labels could lead to cargo separation and a crash, but no injuries or illnesses have been reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

Trimas Corporation is recalling certain Highland-brand Universal Telescopic Bar Carriers, Universal Car Roof Top Basket Carriers, and Multi-Purpose Roof Top Bar Carriers, as well as Reese-brand Carry Power Multi-Purpose Bar Carriers and Carry Power Roof Top Multi-Purpose Steel Basket Carriers. The affected units may have been packaged without proper warning labels that advise consumers not to use the carriers with cargo bags, cargo baskets, cargo boxes, or rooftop accessories.

If these bar carriers are used with the prohibited accessories, there is an increased risk that the cargo could separate from the vehicle. This separation would create a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Trimas will notify owners and provide revised instructions containing the appropriate warnings free of charge. The recall began on January 20, 2015. Owners may contact Cequent Consumer Products' customer service at 1-800-234-6992 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
