SKF Recalls Axle Seals for Chevrolet and GMC Vehicles

SKF is recalling axle seals for 1999-2013 Chevrolet and GMC vehicles because leaking gear oil can contaminate brakes and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where leaking gear oil contaminates brakes, reducing braking ability and increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury risk.

Plain-English summary

SKF USA, Inc. is recalling specific axle seals, part numbers 28554 and 28555, installed on 1999-2013 Chevrolet and GMC full-size vans, pickup trucks, and SUVs with a full-floating rear end. The inner diameter of these seals may be too large to adequately contain differential gear oil, allowing it to leak onto the rear brakes.

Leaking gear oil can contaminate the brake friction material, which reduces the vehicle's braking ability and increases the risk of a crash. The recall affects approximately 82,509 vehicles.

SKF will notify owners. Service centers will inspect vehicles with seal 28554 and replace any leaking seals, while vehicles with seal 28555 will have their axle seals replaced. These services are free of charge. The recall began in September 2014. Owners can contact SKF customer service at 1-800-644-8999 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
