These vehicles are equipped with an automatic over-speed protection system designed to monitor diesel engine speed and shut down the engine if it revs excessively.

In the affected vehicles, the protection system may be wired incorrectly and may not operate as designed. Without a functioning system to control engine speed, excessive engine speed may result if airborne hydrocarbons (combustible vapors) enter through the air intake. This condition may lead to catastrophic engine failure and/or an engine fire.
