Mack Trucks Recalls 2014 CXU and MRU Models for Seat Belt Defect

Mack Trucks is recalling 2014 CXU and MRU trucks because seat belt buckles may fail to release, potentially hindering emergency egress.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (seat belt assembly) that hinders emergency egress, increasing the risk of injury, which aligns with the 'High' severity criteria for risk-of-harm products where injury has not yet been reported.

Plain-English summary

Mack Trucks, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2014 CXU and MRU trucks manufactured between August 12, 2013, and October 9, 2013. These vehicles are equipped with IMMI-brand L9 seat belt buckles that may fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) No. 209, "Seat Belt Assemblies."

The defect involves the latch plate becoming partially engaged with the buckle when the release button is pressed, making the seat belt difficult to unlatch. If the latch plate remains partially engaged, egress from the vehicle could be hindered, which would increase the risk of injury in the event of an emergency.

Mack will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the seat belt buckles and replace them if necessary, free of charge. The recall began on January 30, 2014. Owners may contact Mack Trucks at 1-336-393-2000 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
