Silver Eagle Trailer Converter Dollies Recalled for Axle Beam Defect

What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (axle beam failure) that can lead to loss of control and a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Silver Eagle Manufacturing Company is recalling certain model year 1999-2001 VAST-20W and 2001 CSL-20W trailer converter dollies. The affected units were incorrectly built with a hole in the center of the axle beam pointing downward. This specific configuration causes a stress crack in the tension side of the beam, which can result in axle failure.

If the axle fails, the dolly could steer erratically, causing swerving and increasing the risk of a crash. The recall covers 155 affected units.

Owners should contact Silver Eagle at 1-800-547-6792 to inspect their dollies for the position of the axle beam center hole. Owners of affected dollies can receive a free replacement axle beam, though installation is the owner's responsibility, or $500 towards a replacement dolly for scrapping the old one. The recall began on September 20, 2013. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
