Chrysler is recalling 2010-2012 Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles because a software error may prevent side airbags and seatbelt pre-tensioners from deploying in a crash.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where safety systems (airbags/pre-tensioners) may fail to deploy, significantly increasing the risk of injury in a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling approximately 254,396 model year 2010-2012 Jeep Compass and Patriot vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured between May 6, 2008, and July 20, 2012. The recall addresses a software error in the electrical system that may result in the delayed deployment or non-deployment of seatbelt pre-tensioners and/or side airbags.
In the event of a rollover crash requiring airbag deployment, this software error can lead to the side curtain airbag and/or seatbelt pre-tensioners failing to deploy or deploying late. This failure increases the risk of injury to vehicle occupants during a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and authorized dealers will correct the software error free of charge. The recall began on June 21, 2013. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-247-9753 for more information. Chrysler's internal recall number is N01. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit www.safercar.gov.
