What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect in the fuel system that can cause engine stalling while driving, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural vehicle defects.
Plain-English summary
Chrysler Group LLC is recalling certain model year 2012 Jeep Compass and Jeep Patriot vehicles manufactured between October 18, 2011, and May 7, 2012. The recall involves approximately 20,799 vehicles.
The defect is caused by an incorrectly manufactured transfer tube in the fuel system. This issue may interrupt the transfer of fuel from the secondary side to the primary side of the fuel tank, which can cause the engine to stall. If the engine stalls while driving, it may increase the risk of a crash.
Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel tank transfer tube free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on May 30, 2013, and owners were notified on July 19, 2013, that parts are available. Owners may contact Chrysler at 1-800-853-1403 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
