Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where loss of power to life-saving equipment and warning systems increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Wheeled Coach Industries, Inc. is recalling certain ambulances built on model year 2008 Dodge Sprinter 2500 chassis. These vehicles were manufactured between April 2008 and December 2008. The recall involves a defect in the power disconnect solenoid, which can fail and terminate the flow of electricity to the ambulance conversion.
When the electrical power is interrupted, the siren, warning lights, and patient compartment lights may not operate. Additionally, there may be a loss of power to life-saving equipment in the patient compartment. In an emergency, the ambulance may not be able to alert other vehicles of its presence, which could slow the trip to the hospital and increase the risk of a crash.
Wheeled Coach Industries, Inc. will notify owners, and a Wheeled Coach/Road Rescue service center will replace the defective solenoid free of charge. The recall began on May 31, 2013. Owners may contact Road Rescue at 1-800-628-8178 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
