Elite Recalls 2012 Livestock Trailers Due to Brake Actuator Wear

Elite Trailer Manufacturing is recalling 2012 Livestock Gooseneck trailers because a manufacturing defect in the hydraulic brake actuator could cause a loss of braking ability.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (hydraulic brake failure) that explicitly cites the risk of serious injuries and property damage, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Elite Trailer Manufacturing, LLC is recalling certain model year 2012 Livestock Gooseneck trailers manufactured between November 17, 2011, and January 17, 2012. These vehicles are equipped with Carlisle hydraulic brake actuators.

The recall is due to a manufacturing defect where one of the rotating components in the hydraulic brake pump missed a heat treating operation. This causes the actuator to wear at a higher than normal rate, which could result in the hydraulic pump failing and a loss of braking ability in the trailer. Loss of braking ability can lead to a loss of control of the trailer, increasing the risk of a crash, serious injuries, or property damage.

Elite Trailer has notified all affected owners, and dealers have replaced all of the defective actuators. Owners may contact Elite Trailer at 1-800-657-7305 for more information. Customers may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153) or visit http://www.safercar.gov.
