CBGT Recalls 2012 Gooseneck Trailers Due to Brake Actuator Pump Defect
Custom Built Gooseneck Trailers is recalling 2012 25- and 40-foot trailers because the electric/hydraulic brake actuator pump may fail, increasing crash risk.
What this means for you
Our assessment, not the agency’s: severity 4/5 (Severe).
The hazard poses a serious risk of illness, injury, or structural failure. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where brake failure can result in the loss of braking effort, explicitly increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Custom Built Gooseneck Trailers, Inc. (CBGT) is recalling 2012 model year 25-foot and 40-foot gooseneck trailers manufactured between January 14, 2011, and January 18, 2012. These specific trailers are equipped with an electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pump that may not have been properly heat treated.
The improper heat treatment can cause premature wear of critical components within the pump, potentially rendering the unit inoperable. Because the E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes, failure of this component can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, which increases the risk of a crash.
CBGT will notify owners, and dealers will replace the electric/hydraulic brake actuator pumps free of charge. Owners may contact Custom Built Gooseneck Trailers, Inc. at 1-903-383-2896 for more information. Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit safercar.gov.
