Hyundai Recalls 1.7 Million Vehicles for Stop Lamp Switch Defect

Hyundai is recalling 1,712,336 vehicles from model years 2006-2011 because a malfunctioning stop lamp switch may prevent brake lights from illuminating or disable cruise control, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (stop lamp switch) that can lead to unintentional movement or failure to brake, which aligns with the rubric criteria for 'Severe' (structural vehicle defect or significant injury/property-damage reports).

Plain-English summary

Hyundai Motor Company is recalling 1,712,336 vehicles, including model year 2006-2009 Accent, 2007-2011 Azera, Sonata, and Santa Fe, 2006-2011 Tucson, 2009-2011 Elantra Touring, 2007-2010 Elantra, 2008-2011 Veracruz, 2009-2011 Genesis, 2010-2011 Genesis Coupe, 2007-2008 Entourage, and 2006-2008 Tiburon. This campaign expands a previous recall by adding 652,512 units to the original 1,059,824 vehicles.

The recall addresses a potential malfunction in the stop lamp switch. If the switch fails, the brake lights may not illuminate when the brake pedal is depressed, or the driver may be unable to deactivate cruise control by pressing the brake pedal. Additionally, the defect may cause intermittent operation of the push-button start feature, prevent the shifter from moving out of Park, or illuminate the Electronic Stability Control malfunction light. When the ignition is on, the transmission shifter may move out of Park without the brake being applied, which could lead to unintentional vehicle movement.

These conditions could increase the risk of a crash. Hyundai will notify owners, and dealers will replace the stop lamp switch free of charge. The safety recall began on April 22, 2013. Owners may contact Hyundai at 1-800-633-5151 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
