Hyundai Recalls Multiple Models Due to ABS Module Fire Risk

Hyundai is recalling over 1.6 million vehicles because a leaking ABS module may cause an engine compartment fire. Owners should park outside until the repair is complete.

NHTSA safety advisory

Park this vehicle outside

NHTSA advises parking it away from buildings and other vehicles until the repair is done — the risk exists even when the vehicle is switched off.

This is the agency’s own advisory, not our assessment. Contact the manufacturer or a dealer, and see the official NHTSA notice for the current guidance.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (ABS module) that can cause an engine compartment fire, which the source states can increase the risk of injury. This aligns with the rubric for 'Severe' (Score 4) involving structural vehicle defects or significant injury reports.

Plain-English summary

Hyundai Motor America is recalling approximately 1,649,478 vehicles, including 2011-2015 Elantra, Genesis Coupe, Sonata Hybrid, 2012-2015 Accent, Azera, Veloster, 2013-2015 Elantra Coupe, Santa Fe, 2014-2015 Equus, 2010-2012 Veracruz, 2010-2013 Tucson, 2015 Tucson Fuel Cell, and 2013 Santa Fe Sport models. The recall addresses a defect in the Anti-Lock Brake System (ABS) module, which may leak brake fluid internally and cause an electrical short. This condition can result in an engine compartment fire while the vehicle is parked or being driven.

An engine compartment fire can increase the risk of injury. Owners are advised to park their vehicles outside and away from structures until the recall repair is completed. Dealers will replace the ABS fuse free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed between April 10, 2024, and October 11, 2024.
