Honda is recalling certain 2004-2008 Acura TSX vehicles sold in or registered in specified states. Corrosion can damage the engine control unit and potentially cause the engine to stall, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The notice describes a risk-of-harm vehicle defect involving a potential engine stall and increased crash risk, but it does not report an injury. Under the rubric, a risk-of-harm product with no reported injury is High (score 3).

Plain-English summary

Honda is recalling certain model year 2004-2008 Acura TSX vehicles originally sold in, or currently registered in, Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Kentucky, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, Virginia, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. The recall concerns the electrical system.

Corrosive deicing materials brought in on drivers' footwear can saturate the carpeting that is in contact with the engine Electronic Control Unit (ECU). The ECU case may rust or corrode, potentially causing the engine to stall. A stall increases the risk of a crash.

Honda will notify owners, and Acura dealers will inspect the vehicle and replace any damaged ECU free of charge. A waterproof cover will also be installed on the ECU free of charge. The recall began in April 2013. Owners may contact Acura Client Relations at 1-800-382-2238, select option 4, or visit www.recalls.acura.com.
