Lexus IS Models Recalled for Potential Wiper Arm Failure

Toyota is recalling specific Lexus IS models because wiper arm nuts may be insufficiently torqued, potentially causing wipers to stop working.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (inoperative wipers increasing crash risk) where no specific injuries or fatalities have been reported in the source text, fitting the 'High' severity criteria.

Plain-English summary

Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2006-2012 Lexus IS250 and IS350 vehicles, 2010-2012 Lexus IS250C and IS350C vehicles, and 2008-2011 Lexus IS-F vehicles. The recall covers vehicles manufactured between August 23, 2005, and October 6, 2011, depending on the specific model.

The defect involves nuts that fasten the wiper arms, which may be insufficiently torqued. If the wiper arms are restricted by an external load, such as a buildup of heavy snow, one or both of the wipers may become inoperative. Inoperative wipers could reduce driver visibility and increase the risk of a vehicle crash.

Toyota will notify owners, and Lexus dealers will install new wiper arm nuts free of charge. An interim letter was mailed to owners on April 4, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
