Plain-English summary
Toyota Motor Engineering & Manufacturing is recalling certain model year 2012-2013 Scion IQ vehicles manufactured between July 31, 2011, and October 12, 2012. The recall involves a defect in the cable for the Occupant Classification System (OCS), which may become damaged when the passenger seat is slid forward or backward.
If the OCS cable is damaged, the front passenger airbags may fail to deploy or may deploy inappropriately for the passenger's size and position. This malfunction could increase the risk of personal injury during a vehicle crash that necessitates airbag deployment.
Toyota will notify owners, and dealers will install a protective cover on the OCS weight sensor cable to correct the issue. The recall began on December 20, 2013. Owners may contact Toyota at 1-800-331-4331 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
