GM Recalls 2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze for Fuel Tank Weld Defect
General Motors is recalling 2011-2012 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles because missing welds on fuel tank brackets could allow the tank to come loose in a crash, potentially causing a fuel leak and fire.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (missing welds on fuel tank brackets) that could lead to a fuel leak and fire in a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
General Motors is recalling certain model year 2011 and 2012 Chevrolet Cruze vehicles manufactured between October 2, 2009, and May 14, 2012. The recall involves approximately 53,239 vehicles where attachment welds for the fuel tank strap secondary brackets may have been omitted.
If the welds are missing, the fuel tank could come loose during a crash. This could allow fuel to leak from the tank, and in the presence of an ignition source, this leak could result in a fire.
Dealers will inspect the vehicles for missing welds. If welds are found to be missing, dealers will secure the bracket attachments with fasteners. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The safety recall began on July 9, 2012. Owners may contact the Chevrolet Owner Center at 1-866-694-6546 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
