Daimler Trucks Recalls 12 Western Star 4900 Trucks for Fire Risk

Daimler Trucks is recalling 12 model year 2009 Western Star 4900 trucks because battery cables may pinch and overheat, potentially causing a vehicle fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (pinched cables) that poses a risk of vehicle fire and injury to occupants, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Daimler Trucks North America is recalling 12 model year 2009 Western Star 4900 trucks equipped with DD15 engines. This recall is an expansion of a previous safety recall (09V226).

The defect involves a new forward cab crossmember design that reduced clearance for cab-mounted battery disconnect switch power cables on standard cab height vehicles. During cab articulation, the crossmember may pinch these power cables against the cab. Pinched cables could short to ground and overheat, potentially resulting in a vehicle fire and injury to occupants.

Daimler Trucks will notify owners, and dealers will remove the cables and reinstall them in a new safe location. Damaged cables will be replaced. Both actions will be performed free of charge. The recall began on June 13, 2012. Owners may contact Daimler Trucks toll-free at 1-800-547-0712.
