Maxey Recalls 2011 Gooseneck Trailers Due to Brake Actuator Defect

Maxey Trailers is recalling 2011 Gooseneck Tandem Dual flatbed trailers because improperly heat-treated brake actuator pumps may fail, increasing crash risk.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (brake actuator failure) that explicitly increases the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Maxey Trailers, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2011 Gooseneck Tandem Dual flatbed trailers manufactured between September 2011 and December 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Dexter Axle electric/hydraulic (E/H) brake actuator pumps that may not have been properly heat treated.

The improper heat treatment can cause premature wear of critical components within the pumps, potentially rendering the unit inoperable. Since the E/H brake actuator provides braking power to the trailer brakes, failure of this component can result in the loss of braking effort by the trailer, which increases the risk of a crash.

Maxey Trailers mailed notices of the recall to owners on April 2, 2012. Owners should contact Maxey Trailers at 1-903-784-8059 or a Dexter Axle dealer to have the E/H brake actuator pumps replaced free of charge. Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit safercar.gov for more information.
