What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (front lower control arms) that can result in loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.
Plain-English summary
Subaru of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2002-2007 Impreza, model year 2003-2008 Forester, and model year 2005-2006 Saab 9-2X vehicles. These vehicles were manufactured between September 5, 2000, and November 26, 2007, and were originally sold or are currently registered in specific northeastern and midwestern states, including Massachusetts, Maryland, Michigan, New York, Pennsylvania, and the District of Columbia.
The recall addresses a defect where the front lower control arms may break at the hanger brackets due to corrosion. This corrosion can occur if the hanger brackets are exposed to salty and humid environments, such as roads containing snow-melting agents. A broken control arm can result in the loss of control of the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
Dealers will inspect the degree of corrosion on the front lower control arms and will either rustproof or replace them free of charge. Subaru will handle the Subaru vehicles, while Saab will handle the Saab vehicles. The safety recall was expected to begin during December 2011. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 or Saab at 1-800-955-9007.
