Peterbilt 587 Tractors Recalled for Driveline Seam Weld Defect
PACCAR is recalling certain 2012 Peterbilt 587 tractors because a driveline seam weld may fracture, potentially disabling the vehicle or causing debris to fall on the roadway.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveline fracture) that can result in a disabled vehicle or debris on the roadway, increasing the risk of a crash, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for structural defects and significant injury risk.
Plain-English summary
PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain model year 2012 Peterbilt 587 tractors manufactured between January 12, 2011, and May 20, 2011. These vehicles are equipped with Meritor's Maxton Driveline Assemblies, specifically RPL25 coupling shafts and slip shafts (main) driveline assemblies.
The defect involves tubing that may have a seam weld with insufficient bonding. This can result in the seam weld fracturing when torque is applied. Once the tube seam weld is fractured, the driveline may become inoperable, which may result in a disabled vehicle. Additionally, debris from the driveline may fall on the roadway. Both scenarios can increase the risk of a crash.
Dealers will replace the main drive shaft free of charge. The safety recall began on August 11, 2011. Owners may contact PACCAR at 1-425-468-7400 or the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration's Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
