Audi Recalls A6, S6, and RS6 Models for Fuel Tank Leak Risk

Volkswagen of America is recalling certain 2001-2004 Audi A6, S6, and RS6 vehicles because a fuel tank component may crack, causing a leak that could lead to a fire.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (fuel tank component cracking) that poses a risk of vehicle fire, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury/property-damage reports or structural defects.

Plain-English summary

Volkswagen of America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 2001-2004 Audi A6, model year 2002-2003 Audi S6, and model year 2003 Audi RS6 vehicles equipped with 4.2L engines. These vehicles were manufactured between June 19, 2001, and June 8, 2004. The recall involves 5,992 vehicles.

The defect involves the aging of the plastic material in the fuel tank rollover valve. Combined with bending stress from the aluminum ventilation line, this may lead to cracking of the valve nipple. If this occurs, a fuel leak may result. A fuel leak in the presence of an ignition source could lead to a vehicle fire.

Dealers will reinforce the nipple on the rollover valve to prevent leakage or repair the cracking. The recall was expected to begin during June 2011. Owners may contact Audi at 1-800-822-2834 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
