E-Ton Recalls Motorcycles with Reversed Handlebar Switch Locations

E-Ton is recalling certain 1999-2010 motorcycles because the engine and light switches are on the wrong handlebars, which may cause confusion and increase crash risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the defect (reversed switches) could cause loss of power and increase crash risk, but no specific injuries or fatalities are reported in the source text.

Plain-English summary

E-Ton America LLC is recalling certain model year 1999-2010 E-Ton 50cc and 150cc motorcycles, including the Beamer I, II, III, and Matrix models. The recall involves approximately 25,176 vehicles.

The engine on/off switch and the high/low beam light switch are located on the opposite handlebars from where they should be. Specifically, the engine switch should be on the right, and the light switch on the left, but they are reversed on these models. This configuration fails to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 213. Riders may become confused while operating the vehicle, potentially causing the scooter to lose power during operation and increasing the risk of a crash.

Dealers will repair the scooters and reverse the function switch locations free of charge. Owner notifications are expected to be issued shortly. Owners may contact E-Ton at 1-866-224-3318 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
