What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The source text explicitly states that the defect may be accompanied by flame, smoke, and potential fire. This aligns with the rubric criterion for 'Severe' (4) involving significant injury/property-damage reports or structural vehicle defects leading to fire risk.
Plain-English summary
Braun Corporation is recalling certain model year 2005 through 2011 Paratransit vans built on Ford E-350 chassis. These vehicles were manufactured between April 27, 2005, and July 29, 2010, and are equipped with specific Carrier GenV EM-1 evaporator units containing a Delphi Pack-Con III fuse holder in an Allied Motion motor assembly.
The defect involves the fuse potentially loosening in the fuse holder due to time, temperature, and/or vibration. This loosening can result in high resistance and arcing. If sufficient arcing occurs, the fuse holder may melt, which may be accompanied by flame, smoke, and potential fire.
Owners will be notified by Braun and instructed to contact either Carrier or a Braun dealer to obtain a free remedy. The safety recall began on March 17, 2011. Owners may contact Carrier at 1-800-793-4741 or Braun at 1-800-THE-LIFT (1-800-843-5438). Owners may also contact the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 or visit safercar.gov.
