Braun Recalls Wheelchair Lifts on Ford E-350 Vans Due to Latch Defect

Braun is recalling aftermarket wheelchair lifts installed on 2008-2011 Ford E-350 vans because roll stop latches may bend or misalign, posing a fall risk.

What this means for you

Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where injury has not yet been reported, fitting the High severity criteria for potential fall injuries from a mechanical defect.

Plain-English summary

Braun Corporation is recalling certain Century-2 and Vista-2 wheelchair lifts manufactured between November 20, 2006, and September 10, 2010. These lifts were installed as aftermarket equipment on various vans and transit buses. On October 8, 2012, Braun amended its defect report to include model year 2008 through 2011 Braun-modified Ford E-350 paratransit vans.

The defect involves the roll stop latches on the outer barrier, which may become bent or misaligned over time and with frequent use. If the latches are insufficiently secured, a wheelchair occupant may defeat or ride over the roll stop. If this occurs while the lift platform is in an elevated position, the occupant could fall and sustain injury.

The safety recall began on March 30, 2012. Braun will notify owners, and dealers will repair the vehicles free of charge. Owners may contact the Braun Customer Service Center at 1-800-488-0359 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
