Ford Recalls F-150 and Lincoln Mark LT for Air Bag Defect
Ford is recalling 2004-2006 F-150 trucks and 2006 Lincoln Mark LT vehicles because a chafed wire could cause the driver's air bag to deploy unexpectedly.
What this means for you
Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect where the air bag could deploy unexpectedly, increasing the risk of injury or loss of vehicle control, which aligns with the 'Severe' criteria for significant injury reports or structural defects.
Plain-English summary
Ford Motor Company is recalling certain 2004-2006 model year F-150 pickup trucks and 2006 model year Lincoln Mark LT vehicles. The recall involves approximately 1,325,000 vehicles where the clockspring jumper wire may come into contact with the driver side frontal air bag lower horn plate. This contact can chafe the wire insulation, creating a potential for a short circuit that may illuminate the air bag warning lamp.
If a short circuit occurs, the driver side frontal air bag could deploy inadvertently. An unexpected deployment while the vehicle is in motion increases the risk of injury to the driver or loss of vehicle control.
Ford will notify owners to take their vehicles to a Ford or Lincoln/Mercury dealer to have a new clockspring jumper wire with a protective mesh cover installed. Repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall campaign began on some vehicles in March 2011, with the expanded population expected to begin on or about May 9, 2011. Owners can contact Ford's Customer Relationship Center at 1-866-436-7332 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
