PACCAR Recalls 2007-2008 Kenworth and Peterbilt Trucks for Driveline Defect

PACCAR is recalling 12,873 Kenworth and Peterbilt trucks because a worn universal joint could cause the driveline to detach, leading to loss of power or a crash.

What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (driveline detachment) that can cause the vehicle to become disabled in the roadway and increase the risk of a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

PACCAR Incorporated is recalling certain model year 2007-2008 Kenworth and Peterbilt vehicles manufactured between February 2, 2006, and April 30, 2007. The recall affects 12,873 units, including Kenworth models W900, T800, T600, T2000, and T660, as well as Peterbilt models 357, 378, 379, 385, 386, 387, 388, and 389.

The defect involves the bearing surfaces of the extended lube universal joint that connects the inter-axle driveline to the drive axle. These surfaces may become prematurely worn due to lubrication breakdown or excessive heat. This wear can cause the universal joint to become loose or bind, potentially leading to failure and the detachment of the driveline from the axle.

If the driveline detaches, the vehicle may lose power and become disabled in the roadway. Additionally, the detached driveline could drop onto the road, increasing the risk of a crash. PACCAR is working with its supplier to remedy the vehicles free of charge. The safety recall was expected to begin during February 2011. Owners may contact Kenworth at 425-828-5440 or Peterbilt at 940-591-4196.
