What this means for you

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a structural vehicle defect (rear suspension bracket detachment) that can affect handling and potentially cause a crash, meeting the criteria for a Severe rating.

Plain-English summary

Isuzu Manufacturing Services of America and Honda are recalling certain model year 1998-2002 Isuzu Rodeo, model year 2002 Isuzu Axiom, and model year 1998-2002 Honda Passport vehicles. The recall applies to vehicles originally sold or currently registered in Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Massachusetts, Rhode Island, Connecticut, New York, New Jersey, Pennsylvania, Delaware, Maryland, the District of Columbia, West Virginia, Ohio, Indiana, Michigan, Illinois, Wisconsin, Minnesota, Iowa, Missouri, and Kentucky.

The defect involves excessive corrosion in the vicinity of the forward mounting point bracket for the left or right rear suspension lower link. This corrosion may occur prior to normal expectations in vehicles that have experienced sustained exposure to highly corrosive materials used for road deicing. If the bracket becomes detached from the frame, it can affect vehicle handling and potentially cause a crash.

Dealers will inspect the rear suspension lower link bracket area. For vehicles with little or no corrosion, the area will be treated with an anti-corrosive compound. If corrosion has damaged the bracket and its connection to the frame, a reinforcement bracket will be installed. In rare cases where corrosion is too severe for a reinforcement bracket, a repurchase offer will be extended. All inspections and remedies are free for vehicles 10 years old or less. For vehicles older than 10 years, a free remedy is offered only if the vehicle is presented to a service facility within 12 months of owner notification. The safety recall began on December 10, 2010.
