What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product where the lift may operate with an occupant on the platform, but the source text does not report any specific injuries or fatalities, fitting the 'High' severity criteria for theoretical or unreported harm.
Plain-English summary
Comm-Trans is recalling certain model year 2007-2009 ADA conversion vans built on Ford E-150, E-250, and E-350 chassis. These vehicles were manufactured between December 7, 2007, and December 23, 2009, and are fitted with Ricon Public Use Lifts. This recall pertains only to vehicles altered by Comm-Trans and has no relation to vehicles manufactured directly by Ford Motor Company.
The defect involves the restraint belt on the lift, which is designed to prevent the lift from moving unless the belt tongue is fully engaged and latched in the buckle. Ricon discovered that it is possible for an operator to insert the belt tongue into the buckle without fully engaging the latching mechanism. In this scenario, the belt appears to be latched, allowing the operator to run the lift. If the belt is not fully engaged and latched, the lift may operate with an occupant on the platform, potentially causing injury.
Comm-Trans is working with Ricon to perform the remedy for this campaign. Ricon will provide customers with a warning decal and a DVD-based training aid. The safety recall began on July 6, 2010. Owners may contact Ricon at 1-818-267-3000 or Comm-Trans at 1-901-726-9394 for more information.
