Plain-English summary
Nissan Diesel America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 1999-2010 UD3300 vehicles. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, "Air Brake Systems," due to insufficient air tank reserve capacity.
The defect may result in insufficient air supply to properly operate the brakes during repetitive brake applications. This could lead to reduced braking performance and a vehicle crash without prior warning to the operator.
Owners should bring their vehicles to a dealer to have the air reservoir tank's volume increased to meet FMVSS 121 requirements free of charge. The safety recall for owners of 2008 through 2010 UD3300 vehicles began on August 20, 2010. Notification to owners of 1999 through 2007 UD3300 vehicles is expected to begin at the end of January 2011. Owners may contact Nissan Diesel at 972-756-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
