Plain-English summary

Nissan Diesel America, Inc. is recalling certain model year 1999-2010 UD3300 vehicles. These vehicles fail to comply with Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 121, "Air Brake Systems." The defect involves the brake actuation and release timing of the air brake system, which may not perform correctly.

Operation of a vehicle with incorrect air brake apply/release timing may result in reduced braking performance without warning to the vehicle operator. This condition could result in a vehicle crash.

The safety recall for owners of 2008 through 2010 UD3300 vehicles began on August 20, 2010. Notification to owners of the 1999 through 2007 UD3300 vehicles is expected to begin at the end of January 2011. Dealers will inspect and repair the vehicles at no charge by modifying the air brake line. Owners may contact Nissan Diesel at 1-972-756-5500 or the NHTSA Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236.
