FDA Recalls Cold Smoked Salmon for Listeria Contamination Risk
The Smokehouse of New York is recalling cold smoked salmon products due to potential Listeria monocytogenes contamination found during FDA inspection.
What this means for you
Highest-severity recall. Risk of serious injury or death is documented or strongly suspected. Stop using the product now and follow the agency's instructions.
Our severity reasoning: The agency classification is FDA Class I, which mandates a minimum severity score of 4, and the presence of a high-risk pathogen (Listeria) in a ready-to-eat product typically warrants the highest severity rating due to the potential for serious harm.
Plain-English summary
The Smokehouse of New York, LLC. is voluntarily recalling refrigerated, ready-to-eat, sliced, cold smoked, pastrami smoked salmon. The products are available in 4 oz., 8 oz., and whole sides in vacuum packages. The recall is being conducted because the products have the potential to be contaminated with Listeria monocytogenes based on FDA sampling and analysis.
During an FDA inspection, an environmental sample was collected and submitted to the National Reference Laboratory (NRL) for analysis. The NRL's analysis revealed that 37 out of 99 subsamples were positive for L. monocytogenes, including both Zone 1 and Zone 2 locations. The affected products include Lots 82 through 96 with Sell By Dates of 04/5-19/17. These products were distributed in New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Illinois, Alabama, Minnesota, and Montana.
Consumers who have purchased these products should check their refrigerators for the specific lot numbers and sell-by dates listed above. If the products are found, consumers should discard them or return them to the place of purchase. Listeria monocytogenes can cause serious illness, particularly in pregnant women, newborns, older adults, and people with weakened immune systems.
