The recall includes 650,000 Nighthawk models and 350,000 Lifesaver models. The Nighthawk models included in the recall were manufactured between November 8, 1998, and March 9, 1999. The Lifesaver models included are models 9CO-1 and 9CO-1C manufactured between June 1, 1997, and January 31, 1998.
The recalled alarms are defective because the Lifesaver models could alarm late or not alarm at all, while the Nighthawk models could alarm late. These devices are designed to detect carbon monoxide (CO), a colorless and odorless gas that leaks from fuel-burning appliances. If the alarms fail to function, consumers may be unknowingly exposed to hazardous levels of CO, which can cause injury or death. Kidde Safety and CPSC are not aware of any injuries involving these products; the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
Consumers should call Kidde Safety toll-free at (800) 880-6788 to identify if their alarms are part of the recall. If the unit is affected, consumers will receive a postage-paid envelope to return the alarm. Lifesaver models will be repaired, and Nighthawk models will be inspected, tested, and repaired if needed. Consumers should not return the alarms to stores.
