Kidde is recalling approximately 1.2 million hard-wired smoke alarms and combination smoke/carbon monoxide (CO) alarms in the United States and about 112,000 in Canada. The recall involves the i12010S smoke alarm, the i12010SCO combination smoke/CO alarm, and the KN-COSM-IBA combination smoke/CO alarm. These units were manufactured between October 2013 and May 2014 and are hard-wired into a home's electric power. The i12010S and i12010SCO models feature sealed 10-year batteries, while the KN-COSM-IBA model uses replaceable AA backup batteries. The alarms are white, round, and measure about 5 to 6 inches in diameter, with "Kidde" engraved on the front.
The hazard is that the alarms could fail to alert consumers of a fire or a carbon monoxide incident following a power outage. Kidde has not reported any injuries or illnesses associated with these products. The alarms were sold at retailers including CED, City Electric Supply, HD Supply, Home Depot, Menards Inc., and online at Amazon.com, HomeDepot.com, and shopkidde.com from January 2014 through July 2014 for between $30 and $50.
