Plain-English summary
Trojan Battery Co., in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and the U.S. Coast Guard, is recalling approximately 11,000 marine-type batteries. These 12-volt batteries, which can also be used as auxiliary power sources for mobile homes or recreational vehicles, were sold under brand names including Action Pack, Pro-Guide, Sea Volt, Trojan, and Centennial Battery. The recall involves only Type 27TMN batteries.
The batteries are being recalled because they may have a cracked negative terminal post. This defect could lead to internal sparking and a possible explosion. An exploding battery can result in chemical and thermal burns, as well as lacerations to people in the area. Trojan Battery Co. is not aware of any injuries or incidents involving these batteries, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury.
Consumers with these recalled batteries should stop using them immediately. To determine if a battery is part of the recall, look for the following symbols stamped on the positive battery terminal post: "I01," "I04," "I12," "I14," "I15," "I21," "I29," "J05," and "J17." These batteries were sold at major marine and discount retailers between September 1998 and December 1998 for between $79 and $89. Consumers should return the batteries to the store where they were purchased for a free replacement or call Trojan toll-free at (800) 568-9889 for more information.
