Plain-English summary
Rite Aid Corp. is recalling approximately 225,000 multi-purpose, refillable butane gas lighters in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recalled lighters, identified by item number 4731589-V111, feature on/off switches that may be defective. This defect allows the lighters to be ignited while in the off position and to remain lit after the ignition switch is released.
The hazard associated with these lighters is the potential for burns and unintentional fires. CPSC and Rite Aid are not aware of any injuries involving these products, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The lighters are approximately 11 inches long, have a black plastic base with red plastic trim, and a metal igniter shaft. They are marked "MADE IN CHINA" on the side and have a red sticker reading "SUPER" on the lighter.
Rite Aid stores nationwide sold these lighters from March 1998 to May 1998 for about $2. Consumers with a recalled lighter should stop using it immediately and return it to any Rite Aid store for a full refund. For more information, consumers can call (800) RITE-AID between 8 a.m. and midnight EDT Monday through Friday and between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m. EDT on Saturday.
