Sanrio Inc. is recalling approximately 29,000 stuffed Mascot Plushes animal toys in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall involves 5-inch-high bean-stuffed animals, including Hello Kitty, Keroppi, Pochacco, and Badtz Maru, which were sold nationwide in October 1997 for about $5. Each toy features a quarter-inch wide metal bell that can become detached, presenting an aspiration hazard to young children that could result in death.
CPSC and Sanrio Inc. are not aware of any injuries involving these toys, and the recall is being conducted to prevent the possibility of injury. The affected toys include specific item numbers (014388, 014389, 014390, and 014391) and were sold at Sanrio stores and various other retail locations. A card tag attached to the toys displays the character's name, item number, "Sanrio Inc.", and "Made in China."
Consumers should take these stuffed toys away from young children immediately. They are advised to either remove the bell from the toy or return it to the store of purchase for a full refund. Toys can also be returned by mail for a full refund plus postage to Sanrio's Quality Assurance Department in South San Francisco, California.
