Plain-English summary
Kmart is recalling approximately 74,000 Healthways Ocean Side dive masks in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC). The recall addresses a hazard where the tempered glass in the masks can break into sharp pieces, which can cut divers. Kmart has received seven reports of the glass breaking, resulting in one reported injury where a diver's hand was cut.
The affected dive masks are made of fluorescent yellow, marine blue, or raspberry plastic with clear tempered glass. They were sold as part of a four-piece dive set that included a snorkel and fins. The packaging is a blue, yellow, and white cardboard box labeled "Barbados Healthways Ocean Side...4-Piece Dive Set...Made in China for Kmart." The masks were sold at Kmart and Super Kmart stores nationwide from February 1997 through August 1997 for approximately $20.
Consumers should stop using these dive masks immediately. To obtain a remedy, consumers should return the dive mask or the full set to the nearest Kmart store for a refund. Consumers will receive $8 for the dive mask alone or a full refund for the complete set. For more information, consumers can call Kmart at (800) 63KMART or visit www.kmart.com.
