CPSC Recalls Wooden and Metal Bunk Beds Due to Entrapment Hazard

Thirty-three of the children who died in wooden bunk beds were 3 years old or younger, and all four children who died in metal bunk beds were 2 years old or younger. The voluntary ASTM standard for bunk beds requires that spaces on the top bunk be less than 3.5 inches to prevent such entrapment.

Consumers should stop using the recalled beds immediately and contact the manufacturer or retailer for a replacement guardrail, retrofit kit, or instructions to eliminate the hazard. If a remedy cannot be provided, consumers should discard or destroy the product. Parents and caregivers are urged to prohibit children under age 6 from using the upper bunk.
