CPSC Recalls Wooden and Metal Bunk Beds Due to Entrapment Hazard
Five manufacturers are recalling approximately 3,100 wooden and metal bunk beds because openings on the top bunk present a potential entrapment hazard to young children.

The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) is cooperating with five manufacturers to recall approximately 3,100 wooden and metal bunk beds. The affected products include Acme Trading Metal Bunk Beds, Chicken & Egg Furniture Horizontal and Spindle Rung Blakely Wooden Bunk Beds, IEM Furniture Metal Bunk Beds, Lewis Furniture Wooden Bunk Beds, and Silver Eagle Wooden Bunk/Loft Beds. These beds have openings on the top bunk that are large enough for a child's body to pass through but small enough to entrap a child's head.
Since 1990, CPSC has received reports of 38 children who died from becoming caught in spaces in the top of wooden or metal bunk beds. Thirty-three of the children who died in wooden bunk beds were 3 years old or younger, and all four children who died in metal bunk beds were 2 years old or younger. The voluntary ASTM standard for bunk beds requires that spaces on the top bunk be less than 3.5 inches to prevent such entrapment.
Consumers should stop using the recalled beds immediately and contact the manufacturer or retailer for a replacement guardrail, retrofit kit, or instructions to eliminate the hazard. If a remedy cannot be provided, consumers should discard or destroy the product. Parents and caregivers are urged to prohibit children under age 6 from using the upper bunk.
