The kits, which include a book with science projects and items such as a compass, magnifying glass, and test tube, are intended for children 8 and older. The recall is due to a hazard where the included compass may leak fluid containing kerosene.
The kerosene poses a risk of poisoning if ingested or inhaled by young children. Price Stern Sloan has received one report of a 16-month-old child who vomited after ingesting fluid from the compass. The kits were sold nationwide from March 1996 through August 1996 at warehouse clubs, bookstores, chain stores, and wholesalers for approximately $13 to $22.
Because the manufacturer is out of business, consumers are instructed to discard or destroy these products immediately. Consumers should take the recalled kits away from children to prevent further exposure to the hazardous fluid.
