Ryobi and Sears Recall 10-Inch Table Saws Due to Switch Defect
Ryobi and Sears are recalling approximately 150,000 10-inch table saws because the power switch lock-off mechanism may fail, posing a laceration risk.
What this means for you
Real risk of harm even if no illness or injury has been reported yet. Stop using the product and follow the agency's guidance.
Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a risk-of-harm product (table saws) where the hazard is laceration from the moving blade, but the source explicitly states that no injuries have been reported.
Plain-English summary
Ryobi America Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), is recalling approximately 150,000 10-inch table saws. The affected products are the Ryobi BT3000 and the Sears Craftsman Model 315.22185. These saws were sold nationwide at various home centers and hardware stores starting in May 1991 for the Ryobi model and July 1994 for the Craftsman model. The saws weigh 75 pounds, feature a 10-inch blade and a sliding miter table, and were sold for approximately $400 to $600 each.
The recall is due to a defect in the power switch lock-off mechanism. On some saws, the mechanism may not work correctly, allowing the saw to be restarted without the required key plate if the OFF button is not completely depressed. This defect could allow children or others who should not have access to the saw to operate it, resulting in injury from the moving blade. Ryobi has not received reports of any injuries associated with this problem.
Consumers who own Ryobi BT3000 10-Inch Table Saws with serial numbers ending in four digits lower than 9608, or Sears Craftsman Model 315.22185 10-Inch Table Saws, should call (800) 867-9624 immediately with their serial number. Replacement switches will be installed without charge. Consumers are also advised to confirm full release of the ON button when removing the lock-off key and to always unplug the saw when not in use.
