Plain-English summary
The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC) and Young's Association Inc. are recalling approximately 900,000 disposable cigarette lighters. The lighters, branded as CiG and Snaploc, do not comply with CPSC safety standards. Testing revealed that at least 50 percent of the units can be ignited without using the safety devices designed to prevent young children from igniting them.
The non-refillable lighters were imported from Hong Kong and sold for 50 to 75 cents each in display trays of 50. They were distributed through convenience stores and gas stations in Arizona, Arkansas, California, Hawaii, Idaho, Missouri, New York, Nevada, Oklahoma, Oregon, Washington, and Puerto Rico between June and September 1995. The lighters were available in blue, green, pink, purple, and clear colors.
CPSC and Young's Association are not aware of any injuries involving these lighters. Consumers should stop using the lighters immediately, keep them out of the reach of children, and return them to the place of purchase for a full refund. For more information, consumers can contact Young's Association toll-free at (800) 654-0132 between 9 a.m. and 5 p.m. PST.
