What this means for you

Illness, injury, or structural failure has been reported. Stop using the product immediately and contact the manufacturer for a refund or repair.

Our severity reasoning: The recall involves a fire hazard with eight reported incidents, including one serious fire in a mobile home, which meets the rubric criteria for 'Severe' (significant injury/property-damage reports).

Plain-English summary

Hedstrom Corporation, in cooperation with the U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), voluntarily repaired the wiring harness in approximately 30,000 Hedstrom Probe VI battery-powered riding toys. These 6-wheeled, 2-speed toy all-terrain vehicles were manufactured from 1983 to June 1985 and distributed nationally. The affected units are identified by specific model numbers (67-3890, 67-3891, 67-3892, 67-38921, 67-3893, and 67-38931) and a manufacture date prior to June 1985 on the label located on the front underside of the plastic body. Units manufactured after June 1985 include fuses in the wiring harness and are not affected.

The recall was issued because the wiring harness in the affected toys lacks fuses, creating a risk of fire. The CPSC and Hedstrom are aware of eight reported incidents where these vehicles caught fire, including one serious fire in a mobile home. Fires can occur while the toy is being stored or while it is being ridden by a child, who are recommended to be between 3 and 7 years of age.

Because Hedstrom is out of business, the repair program is no longer available. Consumers should stop using the vehicles immediately and discard or destroy the products to prevent injuries.
